Fruit Growing in the 21st Century – South East Farmer – Mike Hutchinson

Mike HutchinsonMike Hutchinson, Horticultural Director of national agronomy business, Hutchinsons, says that the company prides itself on the high calibre and integrity of its agronomists.

By being at the forefront of investing in and applying new technology in all areas of its business, they are constantly looking to enhance the level of service they can offer to fruit growers who are an important sector of their business throughout the country.

“We pride ourselves on being able to offer top quality, relevant and up to the minute agronomy advice for fruit growers on all aspects of their activities. In October, apple picking will be coming to a close and growers will be in a position to get to grips with orchard nutrition.”

“This year we are fortunate to be able to offer fruit growers our new highly accurate mapping service, TerraMap, for the first time. It is available at two levels of service, standard and premium. This is the ideal time of the year to survey the orchard when results can be analysed and remedial action planned for application well before next season. TerraMap will give current and highly accurate information about the nutritional status of the soil at resolutions of over 800 points per hectare. At the premium level it will also scan for other factors including CEC, organic matter and water holding capacity. The results of TerraMap may advise on reducing inputs, as some other scanning systems always seem to promise but, more importantly it will identify the optimum level at each point across the orchard. In simple terms it aims to apply the right amount of fertiliser in the right place.

Designed to optimise nutrient placement, fruit growers now have the option of employing a specialist contractor who has the capability to apply variable rate fertiliser using machinery for orchards. So now we have completed the loop – information, analysis and application,” said Mike.

Hutchinson is exhibiting at the National Fruit Show on 23-24 October 2019 at the Kent Event Centre, Detling and would be happy to demonstrate and to talk to customers about TerraMap as well as their other fruit technologies such as Fruit Vision, Omnia and Healthy Soils.
